Mosque Architecture

Mosques are central Islamic buildings used for prayer, study, reflection, and community gatherings, with designs varying by region and period. Common features include the sahn (courtyard), mihrab (direction of Mecca), minaret (call-to-prayer tower), and qubba (dome). Mosque decoration often includes Qur’anic calligraphy, lamps, geometric patterns, and richly decorated prayer areas focused around the qibla wall. Many historical mosques also included schools, hospitals, kitchens, baths, and mausoleums, reflecting the Islamic emphasis on charity and community service
